TREASURE MAP, NEWPORT HARBOR, OCEAN AND BAY

Balboa, California: Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce, 1941. Pamphlet. Illustrated with black and white photographs by Dorsey-Hitchcock-Sawyer-King and a full color map by Claude G. Putnam. Printed in color on both sides of a 18 ½” x 16” sheet, which folds to 9 ½” x 4 ¼” (16 panels). An especially bright and clean example, with some very light wear. Scarce, OCLC locates only two copies (Yale and Chapman). This brochure promotes the temperate climate permitting outdoor activities at any time of the year. The colorful map printed on one full side of the brochure depicts everything from sailing and fishing to lawn bowling and horseback riding. The map’s artist, Claude Putnam (1884–1955), moved to Los Angeles from Michigan and was a commercial artist, cartographer, and avid yachtsman. He was also a longtime member and officer of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, which is how he came to create this promotional map in 1939. Near fine. Item #71970
