London: Blackie & Son Limited, 1898. Second Edition. Hardcover. An extra-illustrated edition, with 95 plates (18 called for). Poignant and provocative record of what may be the most remarkable and enduring love triangle in history. Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, was one of the most charismatic figures in Georgian society. Affectionately known as Gee, she was renowned for her style and her involvement in politics. In 1782, she was introduced to Lady Elizabeth Foster, known as Bess, who was estranged from her husband and in financial difficulty. Gee and Bess struck up a very close friendship, and Gee invited Bess to live with her and her husband. This developed into a type of friendship that approached what might be termed 'polyamorous'. Bess became the Duke's mistress and following Gee's death, became Duchess of Devonshire herself. Octavo, two volumes. Full red morocco bindings, with five raised bands, handsome gilt decorations, ornamental dentelles, blue endpapers, and a ribbon marker. The spines are darkened just a touch, with a tiny nick to the spine head of the first volume; otherwise very good. Very good. Item #71956
