BIBLIOTHEQUE ORIENTALE, OU DICTIONNAIRE UNIVERSEL, CONTENANT GENERALEMENT TOUT CE QUI REGARDE LA CONNOISSANCE DES PEUPLES DE L’ORIENT

Maestricht: Chez J.E. Dufour and Ph. Roux, 1776. Second Edition. Hardcover. The first encyclopaedia of the Islamic world. Herbelot dedicated most of his life to this monumental work, which was completed in 1697 by Antoine Galland. It is based on the immense Arabic bibliography (the Kashf al-Zunun) of Hadji Khalfa (Katip Celebi), of which indeed it is largely an abridged translation, but it also contains the substance of a vast number of other Arabic and Turkish compilations and manuscripts. 954 p. Folio. In a modern one-half brown morocco over marbled paper binding, with a burgundy morocco spine label, six raised bands, decorative gilt stamping, blind-stamped designs, and new endpapers. Faint hint of tobacco to the contents. Occasional mild scuffing to the extremities; otherwise very good. Very good. Item #71748
