POESIES DE MADAME DESBORDES-VALMORE, Avec Une Notice par M. Sainte-Beuve

Paris: Charpentier, Libraire-Editeur, 1842. First Edition. Hardcover. From the library of Leon Laurent-Pichat (1823-86), with his bookplate to the front pastedown. A French politician, poet, and man of letters, Laurent-Pichat serialized Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary in his Revue de Paris and was subsequently tried, alongside Flaubert and Auguste-Alexis Pillet, the Revue’s printer, for insulting public morals and offending decent manners. Their acquittal led to the publication of the first edition in 1857. Laurent-Pichat was also a contemporary of Desbordes-Valmore (1786-1859), one of the founders of French romantic poetry. The bookplate of French poet and editor Auguste P. Garnier appears below Laurent-Pichat’s bookplate. Octavo. In a one-quarter green morocco over marbled paper binding, with decorative gilt stamping, four raised bands, marbled endpapers, and a ribbon marker. Minor dust staining to the top edge, with a bit of foxing to the extremities. Mild rubbing to the corners and tips; otherwise very good. Very good. Item #71747
