ADELAIDE NEILSON: A Souvenir

New York: Funk & Wagnalls, 1885. First Edition. Hardcover. Few telegrams shocked the fashionable world in the United States more than that received in mid-August 1880 announcing the sudden death in a French hotel of the English actress Adelaide Neilson (1848-80). From her first visit to America in 1872 at Booth's Theatre in New York, playing Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Julia in The Hunchback, Rosalind in Twelfth Night, and Pauline in The Lady from Lyons until her fourth and final tour in the winter of 1879-80, she enjoyed a critical and popular adoration unequaled by any actress of the age, with the possible exception of Lotta Crabtree. Illustrated with nine mounted albumen photographs, including the portrait inset on the front cover, and an engraving. Octavo. In a three-quarter red morocco over marbled paper binding by Stikeman & Co., with decorative gilt stamping, five raised bands, and matching marbled endpapers. The original wrappers are bound in. The bookplate of Edmund Lincoln Baylies appears on the front flyleaf. The spine is a touch sun faded, with a bit of scuffing along the extremities; otherwise very good. Very good. Item #71739
