Item #71689 THE COURTSHIP LETTERS OF AN ILLINOIS COUPLE. Charles Cunningham, Hattie May Eaton.

THE COURTSHIP LETTERS OF AN ILLINOIS COUPLE

The courtship letters of a young man and woman from Illinois written at the turn of the last century. Charles Cunningham (1870-????), a shopkeeper, is courting Hattie May Eaton (1880-1973), a school teacher, in the letters, which are written back and forth between the pair. Through the letters, the reader gains insight into their lives. Charles writes about the low margins in selling berries. "One case loses the profit on a number of cases. Berries help the sale of fruit jars. In business we have to make one hand wash the other," he wrote on July 9, 1909. The couple was married in 1918, according to ancestry records. The letters were written in 1908-09 and are in very good condition, housed in their original mailing envelopes. There are 40 letters from Charles to Hattie May and 22 letters from Hattie May to Charles, and a single letter to Hattie May from her father. Very good. Item #71689
