THE NIGGER OF THE "NARCISSUS": A Tale of the Sea

London: William Heinemann, 1898. First Edition. Hardcover. The first issue with the "hi" in "his" missing on page 146, four pages of undated ads and sixteen pages of ads dated Autumn 1897, and the "H" on the spine in larger type than the following letters. Generally regarded as the best work of Conrad's early period, this novels concerns the voyage of a sailing-ship from Bombay harbour to the Port of London. It is also Conrad's first major exploration of the psychology of service-of the pressure on a group of seamen "brought to the test...of the moral problems of conduct" by their encounter with elemental nature and with the secret terrors and evasions of two of their comrades. Octavo. Original gray cloth binding, with gilt titles. The front hinge is just starting and still quite sound. Just a hint of foxing to the fore-edge. The spine is darkened just a touch, with some mild shelfwear and a few faint stains; otherwise very good. Very good. Item #71586
