A COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL ART, INCLUDING TWO SKETCHBOOKS

A collection of the artist’s work that includes two sketchbooks and numerous other original pieces. Born in Austin, Texas, Ryan grew up in Washington State, and lived in Escondido, California from 1919. Primarily a printmaker, he was also a respected painter. His work was published in popular magazines of the 1920s and ‘30s, including the Saturday Evening Post, McCalls, Ladies Home Journal, and Westways. Ryan’s superb use of line and color aligns him both with the early modernist art of the American Southwest and the American Art & Crafts movement (Peter Hastings Falk, Who Was Who in American Art). This collection includes: a spiral bound 9 x 6 inch sketchbook dated 1943 with 29 pages of black ink sketches and two of watercolors, one sketch depicts pioneering California modernist painter Anders Aldrin working under a tree on Flat Top; a spiral bound 12 x 9 inch sketchbook dated 1945 with 15 water colors of various points around Southern California from Griffith Park to Palos Verdes, pasted to the verso of the cover is a woodcut presented to Lewis by artist A. Kleinhauer; three 16 1/2 x 12 inch original watercolor paintings, all landscape scenes, two from 1944 and one from 1946, all signed and dated; and an additional 30 sketches measuring 9 inches by between 11 inches and 14 inches, several of these loose illustrations are sketched on both sides and range from a study for an illustration of Bret Harte’s Salome Jane to a view of Ord Street in Los Angeles in 1929. Overall, the illustrations are in very good condition, with some occasional light toning and minor edgewear. Very good. Item #70601
