An American novelist and women’s rights advocate from, Johnston (1870-1936) was one of the best-selling authors of her era and had three silent films adapted from her novels. She was also an active member of the Equal Suffrage League of Virginia, along with Richmond-area activists like Lila Meade Valentine, Ellen Glasgow, and Kate Waller Barrett. Octavo: 350 p. with a color frontispiece and eight mounted black-and-white plates by Frederick C. Yohn. Original green cloth binding, with gilt and black stamping.
