It was Hiroshige (1797-1858) who immortalized the Tokaido or "Eastern Sea Road" which connected the emperor's capital in Kyoto and the seat of the shogun's administration in Edo (now Tokyo). His Tokaido prints were an immediate success in his own time; today they are included among the masterpieces of the world. English adaptation by Gordon Sager. Tipped-in color frontispiece, with 72 color illustrations and a two-page map. Tall octavo. Original natural cloth binding, with black and red stamping.
