KING TURD

KING TURD

New York: Boar's Head Books, 1953. First Edition. Hardcover. The first translation of the entire cycle of Ubu plays: Ubu roi (1896; "King Turd"), Ubu enchaine (1900; "King Turd Enslaved") and Ubu cocu (1944; "Turd Cuckolded"). A dark metaphor for man in the modern age, King Turd is regarded as the first absurdist drama and an important influence on the Theatre of the Absurd school, which included such writers as Jean Genet, Samuel Beckett, and Eugene Ionesco. Translated by Beverley Keith and G. Legman. Octavo. Original orange cloth binding, with gilt titles. Neat pencil notation to the front flyleaf referencing Paul Bowles. The corners are a bit bumped. Some very mild wear to the dust jacket, which is especially bright. A very good copy. Very good / Very good. Item #70053
