Stowe's second abolitionist novel was written partly in response to the criticisms of Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) by both white Southerners and black abolitionists. In Dred, she attempts to explore the issue of slavery from an African American perspective. From the library of Henry Jeffrey Flower, 6th Viscount Ashbrook, with a small bookplate featuring the family crest on the front pastedown and his signature and brief notations to the prefatory leaves. 12mo. In a one-half brown calf over marbled paper binding, with a burgundy morocco spine label, five raised bands, and decorative gilt stamping. The spine is darkened just a bit; otherwise very good.
