ACCIDENTAL AMBASSADOR GORDO: The Comic Strip Art of Gus Arriola

Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 2000. First Edition. Trade paperback. Signed by Arriola on the title page, with a bookplate signed by Arriola and Harvey laid in. An illustrated history with selections from Arriola's popular comic strip Gordo, which ran from 1941 to 1985. Initially designed to be a Mexican version of Li'l Abner, Gordo employed a highly caricatured style and a lazy, overweight title character who spoke in heavily accented English and took naps under a tree wearing a sombrero. Later, Arriola (1917-2008) modified the strip to be more sympathetic, while also introducing his American audience to aspects of Mayan, Aztec, and Mexican customs, history, and folklore. Quarto. Original pictorial paper wrappers. Some mild edgewear; else very good or better. Very good. Item #69866
