Scarce telephone directory for California, Oregon, and Washington from the end of the 19th century, with the names, numbers, and addresses of nearly 45,000 individuals. Of particular interest is an eight-page supplement bound at the beginning of the volume and dated April 1, 1899, one page of which gives names and numbers of those on the "Chinese Exchange" in San Francisco; another provides information in Chinese. Important in its own right as a rare early Western telephone directory, it is also an unusual example of the incorporation of Chinese communities into such publications. 492 p. Octavo. Original burlap-covered boards, with lettering in red and black. Light toning, with some negligible chipping to the fore-edge of the title page. Minor soiling and wear to the boards; else very good. Scarce, OCLC locates only three copies, with a fourth, incomplete copy at Yale. Very good. Item #68955
