FREE SPEECH FOR ME - BUT NOT FOR THEE: How the American Left and Right Relentlessly Censor Each Other

New York: HarperCollins, 1992. Hardcover. From the private library of Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner. As was his practice, Hefner inserted paperclips throughout the text and marked pertinent passages, some of which are accompanied by his marginal notes. In a passage concerning a First Amendment battle waged by Playboy, Hefner writes in the margin, "no threats of boycott are wrong in First Amendment cases". Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation. Hentoff (1925-2017) was an American historian, writer, jazz and country music critic, and onetime senior fellow at the Cato Institute. He was also a frequent contributor to Playboy and like Hefner, a champion of civil liberties. In 1980, Hentoff received one of the first Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Awards for his book The First Freedom: The Tumultuous History of Free Speech. Octavo. Original red buckram binding, with silver titles. The dust jacket is clean and bright.
