Presentation copy, inscribed by Max Lerner to Hugh Hefner and Kimberley Conrad on the front flyleaf: "for Hef and Kim, a huge book but a tiny payment for everything you have done and been for me, with enduring love, Max". As was his practice, Hefner has paperclipped two pages, including one which bears his marginalia. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation. The distinguished professor of American history struck up a friendship with Hefner, whom he first met on a panel in the early 1960s, and was a frequent guest at the Playboy Mansion in the decades that followed. Lerner was dubbed the "Henry Kissinger of the Playboy empire" in a 1979 People magazine profile, whcih also quotes Hefner: "I think our friendship is greatly misunderstood.
