In 1936, a co-operative service for actors, agents, and casting directors was conceived by Donald Gledhill, then Executive Secretary of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Nurtured in following years by Darryl Zanuck, the Academy Players Directory was regarded as the "bible of the industry" well into the modern era.
