With a powerful serve and overhead smash and a sound backhand, Jacobs (1908-97) won nine major championships, including the United States national title four straight times from 1932-35 and the Wimbledon singles in 1936. Long known to have been lesbian, she was in a relationship from 1934 to 1943 with Henrietta Bingham, daughter of Louisville publisher and ambassador to England Robert Bingham. 32 illustrations in aquatone. Octavo. Original green cloth binding, with dark green stamping. The remnants of a small bookseller's label appear on the rear pastedown.
