Denver: The Old West Publishing Company, 1964. First Edition. Hardcover. This is Number 176 of 250 copies signed by Dale L. Morgan. An extensive compilation of letters, newspaper reports, and diaries collected from the Missouri Historical Society, Library of Congress, and the National Archives pertaining to William H. Ashley (1778-1838) and the organization and expeditions of the Missouri Fur Company. Ashley’s famous advertisement in St. Louis newspapers in the winter of 1822 ("The subscribers wish to engage One Hundred Men to ascend the Missouri river to the Rocky Mountains, there to be employed as hunters") was a clarion call to a generation of bold young men like Jedediah Smith, Jim Bridger, Hugh Glass, and William Sublette who opened the continent to American expansion. Morgan (1914-71) considered this his most significant historical work. Numerous illustrations from historical sources, including a color frontispiece by Charles Bodmer, with two facsimiles and three maps, including a large folding map at the rear. Designed and printed by Alfred and Lawton Kennedy. Folio. In a one-half brown leather over brown cloth binding, with a gilt-stamped red leather spine label and three raised bands. A fine copy, housed in the publisher's slipcase. Fine. Item #68385
