THE LIFE OF GEORGE CHAFFEY: A Story of Irrigation Beginnings in California and Australia

Melbourne, Australia: Macmillan & Co. Ltd., 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Never published in the United States. Founder of both Ontario and Etiwanda, California, Chaffee (1848-1932) was an ambitious engineer whose irrigation systems transformed the Inland Empire and the Imperial Valley. The Canadian-born Chaffey also helped to irrigate vast tracts of Australia, which explains the Melbourne imprint of this biography. Includes numerous photographs, illustrations, and maps (one folding). Inscribed by George Chaffey on a prefatory blank leaf. Octavo. Original light green cloth binding, with gilt titles. Paperclip indentation to the top edge of the title page and the opposing leaves, with an archival tape repair to the verso of the title page. The signature of writer Viola Perry Wanger appears below Chaffey's inscription. The binding has been expertly recased, with new endpapers inserted. A closed tear to the inner margin of the title page has been archivally mended with silk. The spine is a touch sun faded, with some mild wear to the corners and tips; else very good. Very good.
