North Hatfield, Massachusetts: Pennyroyal Press, 2006. First Edition. Hardcover. Portraits have been a staple of Barry Moser's work since his first book, The Red Rag, was published in 1970. Most of the portraits were commissioned by trade publishers, university presses, other private presses, and organizations such as the Dickens Society. For this collection Moser reprinted many of his engraved portraits, some for the second or third time, and engraved twenty-five new ones especially for this portfolio, including portraits of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Austen, and Whitman. Each portait is printed on a sheet that measures 9.5 x 12.5 inches. Every print is signed by the artist. An index is also included with numerical and alphabetical keys to the portraits. The text is printed on 80 pound Mohawk Superfine, a domestic, archival sheet. The individual portraits are printed on 70 pound natural Classic Crest, another domestic, archival paper. The sheets are gathered and laid into a simple gold-stamped, black chemise, which is then laid into a handsome, carefully tailored, fall-back case made of the same black fabric that is also stamped in gold. Ann Patchett, the acclaimed novelist, contributed an essay, "Learning to Look Again," about Moser's portraits and the issue of portraiture in general. Moser also contributed an essay about portraiture that appears as an afterword entitled "Shreds and Patches." The typography was designed by Vance Studley, who set the type and printed the text and the portraits at his letterpress studio in Pasadena, California. The printing took place over a period of four years. Of the sixty copies of this portfolio printed, only twenty copies are for sale. This copy is numbered 52 and is signed by Moser, Patchett, and Studley on the colophon. The prospectus is laid in. A fine example, offered at the original list price. Fine. Item #66277
