Buttitta (1907-2004) was the proprietor of the book shop in the George Vanderbilt Hotel in Asheville, North Carolina, whom Fitzgerald met while living there in the summer of 1935. Buttitta published an interview with Fitzgerald ("Fitzgerald's Six Generations") in the Raleigh News and Observer on September 1, 1935. Fitzgerald lectured Buttitta, an aspiring writer, about literature; Buttitta's recollections of their conversations from the basis of this memoir. Inscribed by Buttitta to noted Fitzgerald collector Nick Beck on the front flyleaf. Accompanied by four letters, three typed and one holographic, from Buttitta to Beck, including one in which he explains the decision to change the title of this memoir (it was reissued in 1987 as The Lost Summer: A Personal Memoir of F. Scott Fitzgerald). Octavo. A fine copy in an attractive dust jacket with some faint staining along the edges (not affecting the boards) and two minor creases to the rear flap. Fine / Very good.
