The HMS Dorsetshire was a heavy cruiser of the Royal Navy. In 1937, during her time on the China Station she joined the aircraft carrier Hermes and the cruiser Cumberland in a major simulation test of the Defences of Singapore against a hypothetical Japanese attack. At the beginning of World War II, the ship has numerous assignments in the waters off South America, in the area of the Falkland Islands, and off the coast of Africa. In late May 1941, the Dorsetshire took part in the sinking of the Bismark. In 1942, she and her sister ship, the HMS Cornwall, were attacked and sunk by 53 Japanese dive bombers in the Indian Ocean. Laid in are two original photographs of Dorsetshire seamen (the name of the ship can be seen on their caps) on shore leave in China. Octavo. Original blue paper-covered boards, with gilt titles. Previous owner's ink signature and date (1937) to the front flyleaf. Some brown discoloration to the spine and a few edges, with a small nick near the spine head; otherwise very good. Very good.
