SPEAR: Issue 4, June 1999

Orange, Virginia: Kristie Snyder, 1999. Profusely illustrated. Orange, Virginia: Kristie Snyder, 1999. As black metal zines go, this one’s hard to beat. For starters, there’s a lengthy interview with journalist Michael Moynihan, whose controversial account of the early Norwegian black metal scene, Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground (1998), was published the year prior. Then there’s the conversation with Chris Adler of Burn the Priest, the Richmond, Virginia quintet we now know as Lamb of God. When asked what was the first metal song he heard, Adler responds “Good lord, there are way too many Pabsts between now and then, but I think it was probably ‘Looking Down the Cross’ by Megadeth” - the band Adler joined in 2015. Interviews with Samoth of Emperor, Usurper’s Necromancer, Jan “Ovl” Kenneth of In the Woods…, and In Aeternum’s David Larsson are also included with “the usual reviews, opinions, artwork and blasphemy.” To top it all off, the editor has included an image of herself in full corpse paint with the masthead. Original pictorial paper wrappers (8 ¼” x 10 ¾”). Typical light toning, largely to the extremities. Better than very good. Very good. Item #65033
