This curious book, steeped in the music and lore of the Himalayas, relates the experiences of the intrepid Robert LeMoyne Barrett (1871-1969) and his wife, the writer Katherine Ruth Barrett (nee Ellis, 1879-1961) in Baltistan and Ladakh during 1923-24 in a series of letters. Includes an appendix on the "Caravan Vocabulary" of Urdu words the couple employed on their journey. Tipped in on the verso of the front flyleaf and half-title are slips of paper inscribed by Robert and Katherine Barrett, respectively. Octavo. Original green cloth binding, with pictorial black stamping and white titles. Light dust staining to the top edge. The dust jacket is ever so slightly browned along the spine and folds, with some chipping and wear along the extremities, and a single tape repair to the verso; otherwise very good.
