When he died in 1924 at age 102 he was the oldest former U.S. Senator in American history, and has yet to be surpassed. Errata slip tipped-in at the rear. Signed and dated in the year of publication by Phillips on a prefatory blank leaf. From the James S. Copley Library, with the San Diego newspaper publisher and philanthropist's bookplate to the front pastedown. Full marbled cloth binding, with a gilt-stamped leather spine label.
