Informative account of the early years of William Sherman (1820-1891), when the future Civil War general served as senior resident partner at a banking house in San Francisco between 1853 and 1857. This work is primarily based upon a number of acutely observed reports that Sherman wrote to the home office in St. Louis, detailing many of the tumultuous political, social, and financial events that swept San Francisco and California at mid-century. Includes descriptions of the gold regions and the activities of the Vigilance Committee. Inscribed on a prefatory blank leaf by Clarke to renowned Los Angeles bookseller Jake Zeitlin: "To my friend Jake Zeitlin, even more the patron and friend of authors, printers and bibliophiles than a bookseller, with my most cordial regards, Dwight Clarke." Original blue cloth over green cloth binding, with gilt stamping. Faint spotting to the top edge.
