London: John Lane the Bodley Head Ltd, 1932. Hardcover. This collection of Neopolitan fairy tales was originally published posthumously in Naples, Italy in 1634 and 1636 under the pseudonym Gian Alesio Abbatutis. Although neglected for some time, the work received a great deal of attention after the Brothers Grimm praised it highly as the first national collection of fairy tales. Many of these tales are the oldest known variants in existence, including the earliest known European versions of Rapunzel and Cinderella. Portrait frontispiece, with twelve reproductions of title pages and other illustrations, together with a contemporary plan of the City of Naples. Tall octavo, two volumes. Original blue cloth bindings, with gilt titles. Minor foxing to the top edge, with negligible bumping to the corners and tips. The dust jackets are moderately browned, more so along the spines; otherwise very good. Very good / Very good. Item #69967
